Ariel D. Dávila-Parrilla, MD, FAAOS
Dr. Ariel D. Dávila-Parrilla, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a leading figure in orthopedic surgery at the University of Puerto Rico’s Medical Sciences Campus. After earning his MD, cum laude, from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus in 2011, he pursued extensive postdoctoral training. This included an internship at University Hospital in San Juan and a residency at University of Puerto Rico Affiliated Hospitals, where he served as Chief Resident. He specialized through a fellowship in Comprehensive Hip Preservation at the Harvard Orthopedic Surgery Program, Boston Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Dávila-Parrilla’s professional affiliations underscore his commitment to the field. He is a member of the Colegio de Médicos Cirujanos de Puerto Rico, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy. He holds board certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
In his role as Associate Professor since 2017, Dr. Dávila-Parrilla has significantly contributed to medical education, supervising clinical duties and delivering lectures to medical students and residents. His academic contributions are complemented by his research, which is published in respected journals. His studies address critical topics such as the management of open tibial shaft fractures and the reliability of acetabular morphology measurements.
Dr. Dávila-Parrilla continues to influence the orthopedic community through his clinical practice, teaching, and research, particularly in hip preservation and overall orthopedic health. His career is marked by a commitment to excellence and patient care.
Antonio M. Otero-López, MD, FAAOS
Dr. Antonio M. Otero-López is a prominent figure in the field of orthopedic surgery, particularly known for his extensive work at the University of Puerto Rico’s Medical Sciences Campus. After earning his B.S. in Biology in 1994 and his M.D. in 1998 from the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Otero-López completed his internship in General Surgery and an orthopedic residency at University Hospital in San Juan, finishing in 2003. He further honed his expertise with an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center from 2004 to 2005.
Dr. Otero-López joined the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 2003 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015. His academic contributions are significant, having taught and mentored countless medical students and residents in orthopedic surgery. He has been instrumental in shaping the curriculum and advancing the educational standards within the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Since 2014, he has served as the Program Director for the Orthopedic Surgery Training Program, overseeing the training and development of future orthopedic surgeons.
His research has made substantial contributions to the field, focusing on areas such as musculoskeletal trauma and knee arthroplasty. Dr. Otero-López has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, with notable works including studies on the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty and the efficacy of intra-articular knee injections. His research is widely recognized for its impact on improving surgical techniques and patient outcomes.
Dr. Otero-López’s leadership extends beyond academia. He has held key positions such as Chief of the Orthopedic Section at Ramón Ruiz Arnau University Hospital since 2009 and has been an active member of various professional societies, including serving as President of the Puerto Rico Orthopedic Society (SPOT) from 2022 to 2023.
Through his dedication to teaching, research, and clinical practice, Dr. Antonio M. Otero-López continues to advance the field of orthopedic surgery, making significant contributions to the University of Puerto Rico and the broader medical community. His work has not only enhanced orthopedic education but also improved patient care and surgical outcomes in Puerto Rico.
